Hurray! Water Burns!

“more than that, WITHOUT water, nothing will burn!”

When my good friend Wanda pointed this out to me, I was astonished, rejected the idea out of hand and did not want to, could not believe it. The first thing I said to her was that you use water to extinguish fire, not to create it!  Even though I was absolutely convinced that it was complete nonsense, I decided to hear her out for the sake of decency.

Wanda asked me: "What’s that you’re burning in the fireplace?”

“Well,” I said, “wood, of course!”

Wanda continued: “Well, then you’re burning water!”

I looked at her with a surprised face.........and couldn’t rightly follow what she was talking about..... “What?!” I proclaimed.

Wanda continued: “Yes, water!.......... I’ll explain it to you: a tree grows from a seed in the ground. In the ground there are minerals the tree needs to grow. But as you undoubtedly know, the tree, just like every other plant, needs a lot of water in order to grow!”

“Yes, of course I know that,” I said (not having the slightest clue where she was going with this).

“Well, you have probably also heard that a tree, during its growth, releases oxygen into the air and that it absorbs CO2 from the air.”

“Oh, right,” I said. “That’s why forests are so important, but what does that have to do with water??”

“EVERYTHING!” Wanda exclaimed. “You probably also know that water is two parts hydrogen (H) and one part oxygen (O).”

I nodded at her in confirmation. “They taught me that in school.”

“Still can’t you see?!” Wanda asked me curiously.

“I don’t see anything, just continue telling the story,” I said, somewhat annoyed.

“Well, it’s simple. Just as you understood a moment ago, the tree releases oxygen into the air. So inside the tree remain 2 parts of hydrogen, do you see?” I nodded, understanding. “Good. You see, sunlight ensures that the CO2 from the air is able to form a compound with the hydrogen parts. This way, it can create the building material of the tree (cellulose) so that it can grow!”

Wanda looked at me, smiling. “Are you starting to understand what I’m trying to make clear to you?”

“Yes, I believe so...” I stammered, somewhat dazed. “Great! So, what I meant was that water is one of the tree’s building materials.” She looked me right in the eyes.

“Gosh, I never looked at it that way......” I said.  With a rather light-headed feeling, I then asked Wanda: “So what did you want to tell me about water burning?”

Well, you knew that wood can burn and now you know that wood is made up of water (and CO2) for the most part. So you’ve learnt that wood cannot burn without water! "

A strange feeling went through me. It was just like my eyes were opened for the first time. Suddenly, I felt more in contact with the earth. I felt stronger and freer. I probably radiated this because Wanda beamed and said: “I see you understand!”

She smiled. “And I take it you’re willing to help me write my paper on water as fuel?”

“Gladly, Wanda!” I called triumphantly (asking myself where the scepticism I had felt had gone all of a sudden........!).
